Ownership can mute our enjoyment of things.
We become caught up in paying the bills for repairs or having to juggle our time spent in maintenance.
We look at our new car and despair at the payment each month.
The drive to our new, high-paying job becomes burdensome.
We grow tired of cleaning our McMansion.
The yearly vacation becomes a chore rather than a pleasure.
It’s important for us to step back to get a better view of what we own. Psalm 90:12 is our vantage point.
“So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.”
To number our days means to think about things and their value to us. How will these items increase our quality of life? If they don’t, it’s wisdom to toss them out.
- Sell the car.
- Work a more practical job.
- Move to a manageable house.
- Plan a vacation closer to home, one that everyone can enjoy.
We can pick and choose the gifts we’ve been given to decide what will enhance our lives. We don’t need to cling to all of them. Sometimes the best thing for our Christian walk is to focus on God and let him be the enjoyment in our days.
When our focus is on Jesus, our love for the world will melt away.
