A Fresh Start

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” — 2 Corinthians 5:17 (ESV)

Let's explore what it means to become a new creation in Christ. When we give our lives to Jesus, God doesn’t just clean us up. He transforms us from the inside out. We’re no longer defined by our past, our failures, or even our former identities. We are brand new.

Sports Example #1: The Recruited Walk-On

Imagine a college athlete who wasn’t highly recruited. He walked on to the team with little recognition and no scholarship. But through discipline, character, and perseverance, he earned a starting spot. Eventually, he became the team captain. What changed? Not just his skills—but his identity on the team. In Christ, our position changes too. We go from outsiders to sons and daughters of God, with purpose and power.

Sports Example #2: A Clean Slate After a Trade

Think of a professional athlete who struggled on one team—bad habits, poor performance, even public failure. Then he gets traded. New team, new coach, new environment. He takes that second chance seriously, puts in the work, and turns his career around. In Christ, we get more than a second chance—we get a new life. The old has passed away.

God’s Word doesn’t say “if anyone improves their behavior, they’re better.” It says, “if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.” It’s not about performance; it’s about position. The moment you say yes to Jesus, you are spiritually reborn. You may still be growing, but your identity has shifted — from sinner to saved, from lost to found, from broken to whole.

Let this truth settle deep in your heart:

You are not who you were. In Christ, you are made new — and your best days are ahead!
