Some things just make sense in a certain order. Babies crawl, and then they stand and walk. We break a colt, and then we can ride it as an adult horse. We study our course material, and then we ace the test.
It is when we do things out of order that things seem to go awry. Eat the cake before we cook it? Not before it’s done! Repaint the house before we buy it? We’ve wasted our efforts! Write a check before we make the deposit? It will probably bounce!
Yet the things that make sense to us as humans look very different to God. When he tells us to do something, it does not matter whether we’ve finished preparing the meal, whether we have a vested interest, or even whether the money is in the bank.
When God says jump, we had better jump.
In Haggai 1:2, God wishes his temple to be rebuilt. Yet, the people, having grown wealthy, refuse to begin the work. Instead, they look to a prophecy that said there would be seventy years of captivity before the temple was rebuilt.
God speaks to his people, and he flays their unbelief, for he does not care about doing things in an understandable order. Rather, he cares about our obedience, even when we feel there is no order.
What have we put off doing because we felt it was not yet time? That oft-postponed trip with our family? Retiring before we are too old to enjoy it? Building that new home so our kids have room to grow?
Sometimes God says jump by opening doors to us. What are we afraid of? Remember, this is the God of all creation, and doing things in the proper order is less important to him than reaching out his hand to us and seeing if we will jump.
When the Lord tells us to come to him, we will find we can walk upon the water, as long as we have faith in his call.
