We wake up, throw the covers aside, and we groan.
What’s the struggle for today?
Yesterday the water heater went out. The day before the tire on the car. And the day before that, the pastor called to schedule another meeting of the church board.
When do we get a break? Is God trying to overload our ability to cope? What about that verse that says he will not put more on us than we can endure?
God, are you listening? We’re about there!
Peter 1:6-7 lays bare the cause. It’s a Question of Faith.
“In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.”
Let’s look at how this passage describes true faith in Christ.
“… more precious than gold …”
Here’s what makes this comparison so special. Gold is an element that never tarnishes. It resists any discoloration or oxidation. Plus, it’s soft enough to mold itself to any shape, meaning that if something comes against it, it takes the hit and remains as pure and valuable as ever.
If you’ve ever seen gold “go off,” it means it isn’t pure. Something has been mixed with it, and that’s what’s “gone off.”
When we’re pure before God, when our faith in him is genuine, our struggles—the water heater, the tire, yet another meeting—only bolster what God desires from us.
“Praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.”
Let’s stand steadfast in Jesus. He’s our rock, and on him we stand. When we lift our hands in praise to him, our faith in him becomes more precious than gold in his sight.
