A recent GeoBeats post on YouTube shared an endearing story about a wife asking her husband if he wanted to get a cat. His responses were: “No.” “Never.” “I’m not interested.” Then, an elderly rescue cat happened into their lives. Now, the cat ignores the wife and is glued to the husband’s side, a clingy relationship that the man seems to enjoy as much as the cat.
How many of us are like that with God? We think, “I’m not interested. I’ve got a life going on, and I don’t need anything to get in my way.”
Here’s what we don’t realize: God brings something into our lives that feels like friendship, love, and encouragement. In a nutshell, we are better with God.
Hebrews 13:5-6 sums up our relationship with God:
“Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.’ So we can confidently say, ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?’”
We think, “I don’t have time for God. I’ve got a living to earn.”
God says, “Be content with what you have.”
We say, “I am fine on my own. I’m not interested in God.”
God says, “I will never leave you. I will remain at your side.”
When we let God “happen into our life,” our story changes. He becomes glued to our side, and we become empowered by his constant companionship.
Now we can say, “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?”
The church calls our acceptance of Jesus salvation. We can think of it as releasing control unto him. We live it out as a changed lifestyle, one where we emulate the example of Jesus as we interact with people around us.
Jesus draws us in. Our future changes forever when we choose to share it with him.
