Cracking Our Chrysalis

As a butterfly pupates in its tomb of a chrysalis, it is secure from almost all attackers.

Yet, if the butterfly never breaks free from its safe haven inside the protective cocoon, it will never be able to spread its wings and fly.

Let’s look at Abraham in the Bible. As Abram, he lived in the nation of Ur, one of the wealthiest of his time. He had family and friends and good prospects for the future. He knew people, and they knew him.

Abram was surrounded by a chrysalis of money, people, and historical security. Yet, he stepped out on faith, on the promise of God that “all the nations of the earth shall be blessed” through him.

That couldn’t happen as long as he huddled in his “safe spot,” could it?

Hebrews 11:8-12 recounts the story.

“By faith Abraham … went out, not knowing where he was going. …  Therefore from one man … were born descendants as many as the stars of heaven and as many as the innumerable grains of sand by the seashore.”

What has God promised you? What’s out there in front of you, still waiting for God to miraculously move in your life?

Maybe the holdup is you. You’re still in your safe spot, amid family, friends and good prospects for your future.

Step out on the promises of God, and there’s no telling where God will take you.
