Be Strong and Courageous

Sophie Handford of New Zealand faced a looming challenge.

Living on the Kapiti Coast just outside of Wellington, she was bombarded with the threat that climate change could impact her life and her country. She felt helpless. What could one person from a small, island country do to prevent what many considered to be an impending ecological disaster?

She wondered if there was a way for her to make a difference.

In 2019, she organized two marches comprising nearly 200,000 people. She was elected the same year as New Zealand’s youngest member of Council, a part of the country’s legislative body.

Handford was recently awarded The Impact Award for Climate. What can one person do? As much as they set their mind to.

Joshua 1:9 tells us:

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

What should our goals as Christians be? How about being strong and courageous? Let’s make that our goal for today, and all the other stuff like winning the world for Jesus will no longer overwhelm us with its impossibility.

Sophie Handford felt she could do nothing to impact her world. Now her country looks to Sophie for guidance.

When you feel lost in your Christian walk, remember that God is with you wherever you go. When we step forward in his name, we become the light guiding the world to him.
