Better than Flowers

Leslie Wagner of Peel, Arkansas, tells the story of a time when she went through the check-out at her local market only to find the total was more than she had on her.

She began to remove items from her cart when the shopper behind her held out a $20 to cover the difference.

When Wagner attempted to decline, the shopper told the story of his mother in the hospital. Each day he took her flowers, and the day before, his mother told him to spend the money on something that really mattered.

The $20 was his mother’s flowers, and it was what she wanted him to do.

It’s nice when we buy a bouquet of blooms to display in front of the church pulpit on Sunday morning, or bring donuts for our Sunday school class, but do we remember the hungry family we passed on the corner?

Jeremiah 17:7-8 shares this truth with us:

“Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, and whose hope is the Lord. For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters, which spreads out its roots by the river, and will not fear when heat comes: but its leaf will be green, and will not be anxious in the year of drought, nor will cease from yielding fruit.”

When our faith is based in God, we become aware of his support. We begin to worry less about ourselves and more about others. We learn to trust him, and through our trust, we start down the glorious path of sharing with others the blessings God has shared with us.
