Bright Red Nails

We never want our dreams to crash around us, but that’s exactly what happened to Roberta, as she relates in the Guideposts inspirational magazine. After retirement, a medical issue thrust her into debt that she felt would swallow her.

Roberta’s retirement was not turning out the way she had planned.

One morning, looking at her ragged fingernails, she impulsively made an appointment at an unfamiliar salon, one she could scarcely afford. The visit would change her life.

Annie, the manicurist, in her broken English, showed Roberta a bottle of vibrant red polish and exclaimed, “This is you!”

Through shared conversation, Annie told the story of her family’s migration from Vietnam, and Roberta felt encouraged to tell her own story of debt and struggles with opioids after her long fight with her health.

“I was hooked,” Roberta shared, “but no more. Yet, I can’t get rid of the shame.”

As she painted Roberta’s nail with bright red polish, Annie gave the advice Roberta needed. “Some things we aren’t meant to remember. We must move on.”

We find this sentiment also in Psalm 118:24:

“This is the day the Lord has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.”

Roberta’s life was changed that day as she took the first step toward living what she now calls her best life ever. You can, too. Trust in God and let him be the source of your strength and joy.
