Stepping Out on Faith

Let’s look at a baby.

Here’s the thing: A baby can’t walk. Nope, not a single step. We might hold their hands and let them pretend, but it’s not walking. We laugh with them, all excited, then when we release them, they are back to crawling, often unable to even pull themselves up to stand.

It’s that first step that excites us. One hand on the coffee table. We call to them, and they want to come to us. We can see it in their faces. They lean out, hesitant at first, then they release the coffee table … sometimes they fall. Eventually, with encouragement, they run to us. They have opened up the freedom to go wherever they want.

That’s how the new Christian is. Read in Mark 9:24:

“Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, ‘I believe; help my unbelief!’ ”

Here is a man who couldn’t walk spiritually. He was still holding onto the coffee table. Christ said, “Come,” and the man leaned out, crying, “I can do it, but I’m frightened. What if I fall? Help me walk, please.”

Then Christ reaches out, the man releases his hang-ups and lack of faith, and he is freed to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ who came to deliver all men from sin and hell.

In small ways, the modern Christian must do the same. Certainly, we accept that Christ is our salvation. But what about our children when they are walking in sin? Lord, help my unbelief.

The mortgage we struggle to pay? Lord, help my unbelief.

Our poor bill of health? Lord, help my unbelief.

You’re getting it. We need to turn loose of our children, our mortgage, our health … take that first step toward Jesus. Our faith in Christ will allow us to run, and we’ll never turn back.

Jesus calls to us. When we respond in faith, we run toward him.
