The Christ, a man or a myth?
Clearly, Jesus lived. But was he the Christ, or did people need to believe so badly that they just did, pointing to proof that aligned because they chose to let it?
It’s like Occam’s Razor, a scientific principle that says when all things are considered, the simplest solution is probably the correct one.
Mary. Jesus. No father except God? How does that work?
Occam’s Razor says it doesn’t. It’s too complicated an explanation. It’s simpler to believe that Mary … and Joseph … or someone …
Instead, let’s look at Matthew 1:20, where Joseph is wondering the same thing:
“But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, ‘Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.’ ”
Note where Joseph got his information: from an angel of the Lord.
Joseph didn’t have to doubt his source. It came fully annotated, with centuries of documentation. The scriptures give reference after reference that the Christ was about to be born.
Occam’s Razor is excellent in many situations. The scrape on the car, and our son having the keys … blame placed. The charges on our spouse’s credit card … yep, can’t deny it. The shredded pillow and the stuffing clinging to the dog … Occam’s Razor works there, too.
For the Christ? Complicated is of no consequence. Jesus is who he says he is.
As we gather around our Christmas tree, let’s remember the Christ that we celebrate. He is the son of God, conceived by the Spirit, and the savior of all mankind.
