Experts once claimed that goldfish have a three-second memory.
They track their world in three second intervals. One – two – three – bam! The world begins again.
We know now that’s not true. Five months is the current benchmark. In one study, a sound was played each time the animals were fed. After five months without the sound, when it was replayed, the fish immediately swam towards the feeding station.
What the fish displayed was more than just memory. Returning to the feeding station when it heard the sound revealed a level of trust the creature had developed.
The bell rings, and I’ll get food.
That’s how we need to respond to the presence of God. Our memory of our disappointments in life needs to be about three seconds long.
Our trust in the goodness of Jesus needs to draw us to him no matter how long it’s been since he’s answered our prayers.
Proverbs 28:25-26 reveals the person who chooses to trust in God.
“A greedy man stirs up strife, but the one who trusts in the Lord will be enriched. Whoever trusts in his own mind is a fool, but he who walks in wisdom will be delivered.”
Trusting in God enriches our lives. We learn to depend on him in the small things and the large ones.
People cross us wrongly, and we continue to see the good in them.
Our finances hit a rough spot, and we can see God’s protecting hand despite our troubles.
The answers to our prayers are a long time in coming, and doubt never enters our mind.
The passage tells us we are wise to trust in God.
It also says only a fool would trust in himself as his total source of strength, knowledge, and power.
We are fulfilled, made better, and enriched when we base our hopes and dreams on the will of the Father.
Trust comes from knowledge, and the Lord is our source of both.
