Have you ever been out in a small boat?
It’s fun. You’re right there on the water, close enough to touch. All you need to do is reach, and you can wet your fingers in the cool, clear wake.
It’s when the skies darken and the wind increases that we realize how small our boat really is. Emotional trauma builds on the horizon. The wind of change batters the sides of our craft. And the shore begins to look farther and farther away.
Now we are frightened. What will we do if we lose our job? Is that noise from under the hood our engine going bad?
I can’t be sick, God. I can’t afford to take off work.
When our ship is in a storm, and it can’t get back to shore, the solution is to drop the anchor and trust in its ability to hold secure.
That’s what God wants us to do.
Nahum 1:7 tells us:
“The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; he knows those who take refuge in him.”
God is our Coast Guard cutter on the way to our rescue. He is the dispatcher on the radio with us, giving us advice on how to make our way home. He is the lighthouse that shines through the storm, giving us directions on how to weather the wind and rain until skies are clear once more.
This verse, small though it is, reveals three exciting facets of our Lord.
No. 1 – The Lord is Good.
God cares for our welfare. He desires good things for us.
No. 2 – God is our stronghold in the day of trouble.
Life can batter us, but it can’t defeat us. The Lord surrounds us on every side.
No. 3 – God knows those who take refuge in him.
God’s eye is on us. We are not invisible to him – not even when we are being pummeled by the storms of life.
Let’s anchor in God. He’s the rock that never lets go.
