If the Lord Wills

English Audio Version

Ancient mirrors were little more than beaten brass, polished to a high sheen, enabling the viewer to gain a semblance of their image.

The trouble with brass is that it requires constant polishing to maintain its reflectivity.

The images viewed from these brass mirrors were poor indeed, compared to our modern mirrors. They also give us Paul’s reference in Corinthians that we see through a glass darkly.

Our view of the world is occluded. No matter how  much we polish our mirror, we will never have a truly clear view of what the future holds.

James 4:14-15 is more specific.

“What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes . . . You ought to say, ‘If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.’ ”

James is telling us to place our trust in God. Give God the credit for the good that happens in our lives. Cast off arrogance. Let worry fade into the background. Find meaning in today. Smile. Be content. Treat others well and let tomorrow’s problems remain in tomorrow.

We will never get the future figured out, no matter how many safeguards we put in place. When we trust in our Lord, we’ve made a step in the best direction.

When we see through God’s eyes, the world becomes a different place.
