Trust in others is at the core of a successful job, a wise investment, or a good marriage.
When trust begins to erode, our foundations weaken, and things collapse around us. We no longer get the best job assignments. Our investment strategies become haphazard and risky. We have to prove ourselves to our spouse over and over.
What about with God? How does our trust affect our relationship with him?
Isaiah 26:19-21 gives us the answer. We must either trust in God, or all our plans will be shattered upon the cross of Jesus.
Trust:
Verse 19 lets us know that even though we are dead, if we trust in the Lord, we will rise again. The light of God’s everlasting love will shine upon the earth, and we will awake and sing praises unto him.
This is the due reward of all who have come to God for their salvation. He will not forsake them in that day.
Or:
Verse 20 makes it clear that God’s anger is real. In the day of his judgment, he will come with fire in his eyes and thunder in his voice. His wrath will course over the surface of the earth, and reach into the bowels thereof, casting out all who have sinned and refused to repent. Those who cling to him in that day can only hope to hide from the wrath of the Holy One, for none will be able to dampen his indignation.
Bust:
Sorrowful to say, some will not choose the truth. They will continue to trust in their own strength, brushing God aside, rather than reaching out to him. Verse 21 paints the horrific picture of the final devastation that will fall upon those who have chosen the way of the world, rather than the way of Christ.
The Lord will come from his Holy Place, and the blood of the guilty will gush from the earth. Those who have not turned to Christ will be vomited from the bowels of the earth to lie exposed for all to see.
The only place in which our trust is secure is in the person of Jesus. All others will eventually let us down.
We either Trust or Bust, for with God there is no middle ground.
