The earth turns twenty-four hours a day.
Shrug. We know that. How does it impact today’s teaching?
Think about this: Our planet is dark half the time, and still, the earth is spinning. Life is happening, even in the absence of the sun.
We need illumination to keep us from stumbling along the way. Headlights on our car, perhaps. Floodlights washing a sports venue. Streetlights along a sidewalk. A lamp at our bedside.
When the power fails, and our lights go dark, the world becomes a dangerous place. It’s easy to stumble into a crevasse and difficult to clamber out.
Our spiritual illumination comes from Christ. His life is our example, and in him, we can discern where to place each footstep and how to make safety part of every day.
Psalm 27:14 says we plug in to the power source when we allow the Lord to move on his timetable. We can’t afford to step out of the light by taking charge and doing it on our own.
“Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!”
John 14:1 tells us that when we huddle close to God, we’ll remain in his light, and we’ll find our security in him. To trust in humanity to solve our problems is to stumble into the darkness.
“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in humans.”
Psalm 9:10 guarantees our power source will never fail. We can plug into the Bible any hour of the day or night; our prayer plug is always available; and we have an unending source of spiritual power that runs through the believers who walk at our side.
“And those who know your name put their trust in you, for you, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek you.”
Christ is the way to heaven, the truth that leads us home, and the life that flows from the cross. We are secure in the light of his love.
