We wouldn’t jump into the ocean without knowing how to swim.
Or wander in the dark without a flashlight. Or speed around the track in a Formula 1 car without a crash helmet. Or invest in a new money-making scheme without researching it first.
Or enter the forest with a hungry lion without taking precautions.
1 Peter 5:8 says:
“Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.”
That’s right. There’s a lion in our midst, wandering in and among us as we make our way through our daily activities. He’s sniffing our heels at the grocery store, licking our arm when we are washing the car, and mewling softly as we whisper goodnight to our children.
He’s hungry, too, wanting to eat us right up, right now, this very moment.
We must be protected. We need to prepare ourselves daily. We can do so with the help of the Father and of Jesus, our Lord.
Lion Protection, Level 1: Our Flashlight
We must model our lives after that of the Christ. 1 John 1:7 tells us that “… if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.”
Lion Protection, Level 2: Our Crash Helmet
God empowers us through prayer and the study of the Bible. Ephesians 6:11 reveals the strength that comes from Christ. “Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.”
Lion Protection, Level 3: Our Investment Strategy
We grow in Christ though our fellowship with like-minded believers. Proverbs 11:14 is our promise of a haven of rest. “Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.”
The devil will be there. We can’t change that. We can, however, be fully prepared for his attacks on our lives by being sober-minded and watchful, modeling ourselves after Christ, studying his Word, and keeping involved with our Christian brothers and sisters.
The devil will try to take us down, but Christ has proclaimed we are overcomers through the power of Jesus’ name.
