Unto the Unknown God

What about the atheist?  You know, the unbeliever, the one who claims there’s no god?

Where do they fit into the scheme of God’s plan?

Surely they believe in something. The goodness of mankind. The transcendence of hard work over lazy living. Knowledge. Progress. Family. Relationships. Perhaps it’s even success in the job field that drives them, or championing Mother Earth to restore her to her virgin magnificence.

Without belief in something, what’s the point? Where’s our purpose if we think nothing matters?

Paul addressed this in Acts 17:23-24:

“For as I passed along and observed the objects of your worship, I found also an altar with this inscription: ‘To the unknown god.’ What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you. The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man.”

God is not intrinsic to our great churches and cathedrals. He isn’t found in altars and sacrifices. He’s in our hearts and how we live. He’s in the good things mankind does, our advancing knowledge, and our relations with family and coworkers. Whatever drives us, whatever we believe in, God is there.

We must learn to recognize him for what and who he is. He’s not a foreign concept that’s alien to what’s important to us. He is the creator, the one who continues to watch over his creation, revealing his love for mankind by his revealed Word.

Just because we don’t yet know God doesn’t mean he’s not there. He may be unknown to the atheist, but he’s still in every moment of every day lived on the planet earth.

We find God when we choose to believe in him. It’s the way it works, spelled out in the Bible, our instruction manual for discovering him.

If something leads us astray, toss it aside and leave it on the side of the road.
