Call it Google Maps or OnStar, MyLink or Navteq. They’re made by Alpine, Cobra, Garmin, and Magellan.
GPS. Global Positioning System.
These companies offer us a guiding hand to find our way safely through an ever-confusing world.
Where’s our spiritual GPS system?
John 10:27-30 gives us our answer in the words of Jesus:
“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand. I and the Father are one.”
What we learn from this passage is that Christ is the head of the church. He has absolute knowledge of us on an individual basis. If we love him, we’ll model our lives after him. His unmatched promise is eternal life, and he will never change his mind about us. No outside force can separate us from the Father. God has all power, greater than all men, and he offers us his total and complete protection.
Jesus’ final words tell something very revealing. “I and the Father are one.” There is no distinction within the Godhead. Jesus is God, just as the Father is God, as is the Holy Spirit. Together, they guide us through life, our GPS leading us to our eternal reward.
Google Maps is useful in our cars. We can call OnStar for assistance at any time, use MyLink to find the nearest restaurant, or Navteq to map the globe.
We need more to find our way to heaven. We need the guiding light of Christ to see his hand pointing us the direction to go.
When Christ is our guide, we can never get lost. We will always find our way home.
