Diamond is reputed to be one of the hardest minerals we know. Yet, strike it at the right angle, and it will shear off, broken and greatly reduced in value.
Steel will rust and bend.
Even carbon fiber, one of the miracles of the automotive world, has its flaws. Under enough stress, it shatters, and it is useless to no one.
Where do we find strength that is greater than diamonds, steel, and carbon fiber? We’re not speaking of the natural world, either. In our spiritual walk, what will outlast diamond, have greater tensile strength than steel, and never crack, no matter how much pressure we put it under?
Rock and Word, of course.
The foundation (rock) of our belief system must be Christ (Word) crucified, for Christ is the rock upon which we stand. He is our cornerstone, our foundation, and our lasting underpinnings.
Matthew 7:25 comes from the story of the wise man and the foolish man, one who built upon the rock, and the other on the sand:
“And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house: and it fell not; for it was founded upon a rock (Jesus).”
Forget diamonds, steel, and carbon fiber. We have something greater. We have Christ, who is the Word and the rock, and he will be our strength in any storm that blows our way.
The true test of our faith is seen in who survives when the storms of life smash into us. When we stand on Christ, our footing will be secure.
