Visit an elementary school play sometime. The progress of events in the production is clearly laid out. The bad guy snatches the damsel, the white knight rushes in, and the good guys live happily ever after.
When the story’s half over, we remember the beginning, and we have no doubt it’ll come to an end. We see the story playing itself out from one moment to the next. We don’t get stuck in the middle and imagine the damsel being trapped forever. That’s when we know the good knight will come riding in on his white steed and turn things around.
Genesis 2:7 tells us the beginning of God’s grand production:
“Then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.”
Romans 6:23 says the ending is already written:
“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
John 3:16 is God in the middle. He sends his rescuing knight onto the scene:
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”
All good stories have a beginning, middle, and an end. So do the events of our life. When we feel overwhelmed by disasters we don’t understand, remember, we’re still in the middle of God’s story. His ending is on the way. Jesus is coming to carry us home.
Our trust is in God, for he’s written all the parts of the story already, the beginning, the middle, and the end.
