God’s Lovely Gift

We love presents.

Christmas, birthdays, and Valentine’s Day. All of them, every one. If it’s gift-giving time, we have our hands out.

The children of Israel had escaped Egypt and were returning to the land which God had promised them. The hitch they ran into was that in their 400-year absence, other people had moved in and tucked in the sheets. They now considered Canaan their home, and these interlopers had no intention of giving it up.

Yet two men stood up and proclaimed their faith in the promises of God. We read the words of Joshua and Caleb in Numbers 14:8:

“If the Lord delight in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it [to] us; a land which flows with milk and honey.”

This wasn’t a Christmas gift, something received because it was their birthday, or a box of sweets for a loved one. They were required to fight for this gift.

Do we forget this today? We pray, and if it doesn’t come easily, then it’s not from God? Joshua and Caleb would tell us differently. What God promises us, we must reach out and grasp. Sometimes we must flash the sword of God’s righteous nature, as we step out into the promises that have come to us in his name.

Let’s strap on our Kevlar and put on our night-vision helmets. God’s given us the gift, but it’s up to us to battle until the devil turns loose of what’s already ours.

What we’ve earned through Christ sometimes becomes the lessons we learn as he brings us to the other side.

Excerpt of the Day

Disbelief is fine. Refusing to move past it when confronted with the truth cuts God to the quick.
