Investing money is a serious business. It’s easy to lose thousands if we happen to trust the wrong people. Pyramid schemes are one example. They promise substantial returns on what we put in, but our investments aren’t backed up with anything real. It’s a sham, and returns paid to early backers come out of the money put in by the newest suckers, er, investors.
We need proof that our investment is sound.
Year ago, U.S. dollars were silver certificates. On the face of the bill, we could find a guarantee that we could take our greenback and exchange it for its worth in bullion. It was a stamp of guarantee, our government’s promise that our money had the value they claimed it did.
What promise do we have in the value of our soul? When we come to Christ, what is our proof that we will make it to heaven? What is our soul stamp?
2 Corinthians 1:21-22 gives us our answer:
“Now [God] which stablishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, is God who has also sealed us, and given the earnest of the spirit in our hearts.”
This is our soul stamp, God’s declaration that he will keep his faithful followers unto the final days of his coming return. Our source of God’s promise is Christ’s sacrifice on the cross. Our seal of ownership is God’s guarantee, our assurance that everything he has promised, the redemption and eternal life that Jesus died and paid for, will be showered upon us in the fullness of time.
In the individual moments of our daily walk, we can feel the presence of the Holy Spirit as our continual reminder that we do not walk alone, that Christ resides in our being; and that our flesh will one day be changed and we will rise to meet our God in the heavens and reside with him for all time.
We have God’s guarantee, his stamp of authenticity on our soul, and there’s no better promise than that.
We can trust God’s promises, for they will come true every time.
