A New Revelation

There’s a song that talks about “that old-time religion” and how it’s “good enough for me.” Don’t we feel that way sometimes, that we’ve about got our Christian walk figured out? There’s no need to challenge our spiritual belief system. We’ve studied the Word over the course of four years at a Christian college, we’ve prayed through enough for a dozen people, and we feel the love of God all around us.

We don’t even harbor the slightest qualm of uncertainty. We know we are chosen of God, and we are doing good works in his name.

What if God’s ready to reveal himself in even greater depth? Are we ready to listen to his voice? In Luke 24:30-31, the disciples thought they had Jesus figured out. He had lived among them, filling their lives with parables and miracles. Now he was gone. It was time to move on, to get past his death on the cross, and apply themselves to the practical aspects of living day-to-day.

They couldn’t see Jesus when he stood with them face-to-face.

“And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and break, and gave it to them. And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight.”

Isn’t that just like Jesus today? When we least expect him, he reveals himself to us in a stunning revelation, then he disappears from our presence. He doesn’t allow us to become complacent in our beliefs about him. He is new every day, present at our side even when we can’t see him, guiding us along paths toward him, so that his will is accomplished in our lives. We may not recognize him, but he certainly is aware of us. When he reveals himself will be at a time we least expect it, and our new revelation of his total awesomeness will sustain us through any darkness that might come our way. That old-time religion is a great place to start, but it’s just that, a start. God has new places he wants us to go.

When we quit “looking” for Jesus, we’ll find he’s been at our side all the time.
