Too Good to Be True

In Frank Peretti’s supernatural thriller The Visitation, a man shows up in a small town creating miracles of healing and revealing past secrets no one except Jesus could possibly know. The town wants desperately to believe. Even the ministerial alliance is unified, accepting their visitor at face value, except for one pastor who is certain this new “Jesus” is simply too good to be true.

It’s the same in all areas of our lives. If the new diet claims to cancel our calories, allowing us to eat as much as we want, well, that seems just a little too good to be true. 100,000 mile tires? Yeah, right. What about investments that give a 50% return every year? They really have those, right? Sure, and there’s a bridge in Brooklyn we might be interesting in buying.

Then, sometimes the truth is the truth, no matter how far-fetched it sounds. Consider this scene: Peter had been locked in prison, chained, with soldiers on either side. The door was sealed, and a keeper watched over the entrance. The other disciples expected him to be executed as Jesus was.

Things weren’t looking good for Peter.

Yet, an angel of the Lord delivered Peter from his cell. When Peter arrived at the house where the rest of the disciples were gathered, he knocked on the door. A servant in the house recognized Peter’s voice and ran to tell the others that their companion was safe and outside the door.

The news was simply too good to be true.

Acts 12:15 tells us:

“And they said unto [the servant], You are mad. But she constantly affirmed that it was even so. Then said they, It is [Peter’s] angel.”

When we face disbelief over our faith, we need to do what Peter did. The very next verse tells us:

“But Peter continued knocking…”

Our salvation isn’t too good to be true. God’s healing is a promise we can claim with our whole heart. Our families, our finances, and even our legal conundrums, there’s nothing God won’t do when we turn our problems over to him.

There isn't anything God promises that’s “too good to be true.” We just need to keep on claiming his truth, so that we will be ready when it comes to pass.

If we find it in the Bible, we can cash our check. It’s already signed by the Son of the Almighty God.
