Uruguay racing driver Gonzalo Rodriguez was named in July 2013 as one of the 50 greatest racers to have never raced in Formula One.
He had a contract with Patrick Racing, yet he never made it onto the F1 circuit. His life went out of control on September 11, 1999, during a qualifying run for the Honda Grand Prix at Laguna Seca in Salinas, California. He hit a concrete barrier head-on at full speed. He didn’t survive.
That feels like everyday life, sometimes. We’re rushing ahead full throttle, the barriers are in front of us, and we aren’t slowing down. Things are out of our control. Not even slamming on the brakes seems to make a difference.
When we turn to the Word, we learn that there is someone who is in control. Our heavenly Father, Wonder of all wonders, has his hand on every facet of our lives.
Psalm 104:5 tells us he was there at the very beginning of all that was and is.
“He set the earth on its foundations, so that it should never be moved.”
Ecclesiastes 1:5 is our revelation of God’s orderly nature.
“The sun rises, and the sun goes down, and hastens to the place where it rises.”
Psalm 93:1 erases all credit from the devil’s tally sheet.
“The Lord reigns; he is robed in majesty; the Lord is robed; he has put on strength as his belt. Yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved.”
1 Chronicles 16:30 speaks of the respect God deserves.
“Tremble before him, all the earth; yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved.”
1 Samuel 2:8 champions the poor and needy.
“He raises up the poor from the dust; he lifts the needy from the ash heap to make them sit with princes and inherit a seat of honor. For the pillars of the earth are the Lord's, and on them he has set the world.”
Genesis 1:1 reveals that God was there, and all that we see, from the green fields around us to the stars in the heavens, came from his outstretched hand, flowing directly to us.
“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”
Gonzalo Rodriguez’s life has been immortalized in the documentary Gonchi. As a result of his death (and others in similar circumstances), new safety devices have been instituted that save the lives of racers in devastating accidents.
Jesus’ life has been immortalized in the Bible. As a result of his death on the cross, millions of people have found new life through salvation in him.
Our lives are never out of control when we let Jesus behind the wheel.
