Our Bedtime Stories

Bedtime stories are wonderful, all dragons, fairy princesses, and happily-ever-afters. Oh, that they could be true.

Many parents go to devious ends to convince their children Santa has visited their house for Christmas, even eating the cookies by the tree and putting fake “snow” footprints on the rugs.

We want our children to believe. It’s fun, and we desire for them to enjoy the experience as much as we once did.

The story of Jesus is different in almost every way. We don’t need to invent proof. The Word of God supports every story ever told about our Lord.

Hebrews 11:6 tells us he exists and rewards us for our faith in him:

“And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.”

John 14:26 says he will be with us every single day:

“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.”

Luke 10:27 gives us our part to play, to love God, and then to share that love with the people around us:

“And he answered, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.’ ”

Matthew 5:1-48 is our tale of happily ever after. It begins with:

“Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him. And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying: ‘Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth...’ ”

We don’t need dragons, fairy princesses, or fake footprints in the snow. We have Jesus. The record is there, debated and studied for two thousand years, and still true today. The Bible is our record of the story of Jesus and his love for all mankind.

Let’s make Jesus our children’s bedtime story, and they will grow to love him as much as we do.

When we teach our children the truth, they will follow after Jesus all the days of their lives.

If something leads us astray, toss it aside and leave it on the side of the road.
