The Painting Behind the Painting

Leonardo da Vinci was a master painter, inventor, and sculptor.

He left behind a life steeped in art. In the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence he constructed a magnificent fresco that was covered over after only a few years with a completely different fresco by Giorgio Vasari.

Where is that da Vinci fresco? Could it be recovered?

It wasn’t unusual in the time to add new brick walls over old frescoes and leave the original intact. In 1861 a wall containing a fresco by Vasari was removed from the church of Santa Maria Novella to reveal an even greater masterpiece by the renowned artist Masaccio.

Isaiah 8:6-7 tells us:

“This people refuses the waters of Shiloah…therefore…the Lord brings upon them the waters of the river…”

What’s the truth behind the words penned by the great prophet?

Shiloah is the gentleness of Christ, come to earth to draw all men unto him. He welcomed the children, the downtrodden, and the widows who called unto him. The lepers knew his healing touch, and even tax collectors dined at his side.

Shiloah is the cross, come to replace the law, to allow men direct access to God. Shiloah is our salvation, healing, and eternal life through Christ our king.

The rest of the truth is what happens if we refuse Christ. The waters of the rising river will soon overpower us, and we’ll find ourselves covered up, our magnificence hidden behind false walls and fleeting frescoes. It’s only when we uncover what’s underneath that God can begin to shine through us.

Is that lost da Vinci still hidden behind Vasari’s 16th century fresco? We may never know. Florence’s city fathers have halted the search.

Are we still searching for the beauty of Christ behind the confusion of the world? He’s still searching for us. If we accept him as our savior, we’ve uncovered the painting behind the painting, and our beauty will be visible to the entire world.

Sin is a wall, hiding the beauty that God created us to be.
