Healing was one of Jesus’ inroads into the lives of the people he ministered to while he was alive on this earth. The Word is filled with examples of his miraculous touch among the poor and needy.
He also healed the prosperous and those of high standing. We find both in the eighth chapter of Luke.
Jairus was a ruler of the synagogue, a wealthy and highly orthodox Jew. Jesus responded to his plea for his daughter, and he headed with Jairus to his home.
We also know of the woman with the issue of blood who prevented Jesus from making it to Jairus’ home in time to heal his daughter.
Luke 8:44 tells us:
“[She] came behind him, and touched the border of his garment: and immediately her issue of blood stanched.”
The woman didn’t even ask Jesus for help. She simply touched his garment, and she was healed.
She didn’t fool Jesus, either. He knew exactly what she had done, and he called, “Who touched me?”
The reality is that she didn’t touch Jesus. She touched the border of his robes. Devoutly religious Jews wore four tassels attached to the corners of their garments, each sporting a blue thread. The thread symbolized the commandments of God and the Jews’ commitment to follow after him. One of these tassels is undoubtedly what she touched.
Jesus’ healing power flowed from his person, along that blue thread, and into the body of a woman filled with faith in Jesus’ healing ability.
During this healing, Jairus’ daughter died. Was Jesus worried? No. Rather, he comforted the man, telling him, “Fear not. Simply believe.”
Jesus had more than enough power to do all he had promised and more. The wearer of the blue thread that spoke of the Jews’ devotion to Jehovah was more than well equipped to both heal a suffering woman and bring a child back to life.
One didn’t have to get in the way of the other.
What do we do when God’s promises seem to get sidelined by others’ success? Do we give up, rail at God, and stomp off in anger and despair? Or, do we simply believe?
God has the power to do all and above everything we ask of him, if only we trust in the power of his name.
Our faith in God can supersede all obstacles that seem to get in our way.
