The Boomerang Effect

Some things like to bite us on the backside.

We cheat on our taxes, and the IRS slaps a fine on us that makes our original bill look paltry. We slip up on an inspection on the stability of the ground, and our house settles and cracks. We fail to renew our insurance, and medical bills suck away our savings.

It’s like tossing a boomerang and forgetting that it’s coming back at us as soon as we turn our heads.

Take a slingshot. We put a stone in the leather sling, release it, and it flies far way, hitting our target, if we have good aim. How silly would it be to attach the stone so that it can’t come free, then shoot it at a target? It would fly back and hit us on the hand.

It’s the boomerang effect. When we do something stupid, it’s bound to come back and bite us, because that’s what stupid things do.

Proverbs 26:8 tells us:

“As he who binds a stone in a sling, so is he who gives honor to a fool.”

Who is the fool we are to avoid? The Expositor’s Study Bible tells us he is the man who does not believe in or abide by the Word of God.

If we follow after the fools of this world who cry that there is no God, the “truths” we espouse will come back to bite us. Our boastful proclamations of human supremacy will fly from our mouths, and just when we think they are gone, we will turn our heads, and they will whack us in the noggin. The truth will be made real.

God is alive, and his hand created the world in which we live. There is no question of his supremacy.

Yet, some still refuse to believe. We read of them in Proverbs 26:11:

“As a dog returns to his vomit, so a fool returns to his folly.”

Hm. Makes one wonder what’s about to hit humanity in the back of the head.

When we trust in Jesus, we don’t have to worry about what’s sneaking up from behind.

Excerpt of the Day

A promise to the devil can be laughed off when we have Jesus standing at our side. A promise from the devil is worthless, and should be laughed off even faster.
