God’s Tire Tracks

When law officers receive a missing persons call, they look for clues to connect the facts around them with what might have taken place. When they find details that match, they know they have a lead that may solve the case.

For example, a child is lost in the woods. A red piece of yarn is found dangling on a low branch. The parents report the child was wearing a red sweater. Voila! The authorities are reassured they are heading the right direction, and the child will be found.

Tire tracks are another clue. Let’s say the child isn’t recovered within the first few hours. Tire tracks are seen in a muddy area, ones that could only be from an off-road vehicle. The police learn that particular tread is one used specifically by forest service workers. The dots are connected, and within minutes, the parents learn their child is safe, if a little worn and hungry.

As members of the human race, we are constantly on the search for God. Where is he? What are the clues that lead us to him? If we turn over enough rocks, will one someday say Made by God ? How can we identify the tire tracks that will show he has been our way?

There are three verses in God’s Word that specifically address the tire tracks left by God. They give us a clue what to look for when searching for our God.

The first verse is Genesis 1:26. Read along:

“Then God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.’ ”

Look at these three words: in our image. We, us humans, the jokers who search so diligently for an almighty God, are the very tire tracks he left behind. We are the exact image of God.

The second verse is from John 1:18. Check this out:

“No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father's side, he has made him known.”

We will not find Made by God on the underside of a rock. We will not find our evidence in a scientific journal or in a sudden revelation to the entire world. He has hidden himself too well for that.

The third verse reveals the biggest, deepest tire track in all creation. John 3:16, one of the most recognized verses from the Bible, paints the scene:

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”

God’s tire tracks are written all over our history books. We know Jesus lived. God sent his Son to earth at a moment when Rome was keeping better records than at any other time before or afterward. We can measure the width, depth, and treads of God’s tire tracks in minute detail by looking at the history books of the very world in which we live.

Or, we can make it easy and open the Holy Word of God, the Bible.

God’s tire tracks are everywhere. If we want to see them, all we need to do is open our eyes.

Disbelief is fine. Refusing to move past it when confronted with the truth cuts God to the quick.
