The Great Prince

What is special about a prince?

Sure, he can kiss our lips, and we will arise from a deep sleep. He can rescue us from a dragon, and we will ride away with him on a white horse. He might even dance with us far into the night, and search us out when our carriage turns into a pumpkin.

Do we even have to ask what is special about a prince? The magic is wrapped up in the fairy tales of our childhood. He is the one that rescues us from whatever bad situation comes our way.

There are many great princes in the fairy tale world. No matter which one comes to our rescue, in his arms, we will rule at his side over all the kingdoms of this world.

Who are the great princes in God’s Holy Word? Let’s find out.

Daniel 12:1 says:

“At that time shall arise Michael, the great prince who has charge of your people. And there shall be a time of trouble, such as never has been since there was a nation till that time. But at that time your people shall be delivered, everyone whose name shall be found written in the book.”

Ah, one great prince is Michael. So, just who is Michael? Let’s see what Jude 1:9 tells us:

“But when the archangel Michael, contending with the devil, was disputing about the body of Moses, he did not presume to pronounce a blasphemous judgment, but said, ‘The Lord rebuke you.’ ”

Michael is an angel, but he’s more. He’s an archangel, one given great power to fight for the sake and rights of all humanity. One example is given in Revelation 12:7:

“Now war arose in heaven, Michael and his angels fighting against the dragon. And the dragon and his angels fought back…”

Who is the dragon? Verse 9 tells us he is “the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world.”

So, Michael, our prince, rescues us from a fiery dragon, just like a fairy tale prince would do. Nice!

There’s more, though. Michael is not our only great prince. Look at these mighty men of valor who would rescue us from whatever bad situation might come our way:

Matthew 16:18 says:

“And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”

Peter is a prince among princes because he found his strength in his faith. It is our faith in Christ that enables us to stake our spiritual claim and never give in to the devil.

Acts 7:59 tells this story:

“And as they were stoning Stephen, he called out, ‘Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.’ ”

Stephen’s strength is shown in his willingness to walk the steps God laid out for him. When we follow Stephen’s example, we will be mighty men and women for God.

John 15:26 names a great prince that resides in us:

“But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me.”

Who is this helper? The Holy Spirit, of course, the mighty prince who resides in us and gives us strength to fend off the attacks of the unholy one.

What is the formidable dragon that keeps us trapped in our fear? What is the pumpkin that keeps us running from God? What has put us to sleep spiritually? Whatever it is, God has given us great princes throughout the Word as examples of his strength and power. When we take their mantles onto our shoulders, we become strong in him.

Our Great Prince brings us Great Victory through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Disbelief is fine. Refusing to move past it when confronted with the truth cuts God to the quick.
