Lost Love Letdown

Love is a chemical reaction in the brain.

No, we cry! It is so much more!

Yet, science tells us it is the chemical signals sent by our visual and auditory receptors that cause love to bloom. Someone speaks kind words to us, and chemicals of pleasure surge through our brain. A friend touches our arm each time they greet us, and we feel more closely connected. How? That release of chemicals in the brain.

Dopamine, endorphins, and other hormones control who and what we love.

That weak-kneed feeling of love? It is nothing more than chemical messengers telling our body what to do. We are human. It is how we are made. It feels good, and each time that chemical is triggered, it broadens love’s foundations.

Does love eventually become more? Certainly. Memories of experiences shared, common ground, and learning to do for one another are all part of love.

However, without that chemical reinforcement, it will all fall apart once again. If it falls apart for only one person, the other is left with a lost love letdown. The chemicals still fire, but our loved one no longer reciprocates our feelings.

God’s Word gives us pointers to help us through those rough times.

We can cast all our cares upon him, for he cares for us. 1 Peter 5:7.

We can do all things through him who strengthens us. Philippians 4:13.

If we humble ourselves and seek his face, God will hear our cries. 2 Chronicles 7:14.

He gives peace to us, and he does not wish our hearts to be troubled or afraid. John 14:27.

The most well-known of God’s uplifting verses for our lost love letdown is one most of us could quote by heart:

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. Psalm 23:4.

Love may start as a chemical reaction, and it may be the interruption of that chemical reaction that causes the pain of our lost love letdown. However, Jesus is our solution, for he knows what it is to have his heart broken. He will comfort us in our time of need.

When love breaks down, Jesus can lift us up.
