The Long Journey

Track a life from birth to death. A person wrapped in old age might remark, “How quickly the years fly!” Yet, to a child, the end seems light years away.

Number the days. Fill a journal with one day’s activities per page, and we will have two hundred journals on our shelf by life’s end.

It’s a long journey, filled with the discovery of childhood, the angst of the teen years, and the desperate longing for love in our twenties.

Then, what if all our securities are ripped from us? We are forced to move across the country, leaving loved ones behind. Or our finances crumple before our eyes. Or, heaven forbid, we are hit with a debilitating injury or illness. How do we continue to walk that long road?

God’s Word gives us a number of encouraging reminders that he is with us all along the way.

Reminder #1:

Numbers 33:1-2

“These are the journeys of the sons of Israel, by which they came out from the land of Egypt by their armies, under the leadership of Moses and Aaron. Moses recorded their starting places according to their journeys by the command of the LORD, and these are their journeys according to their starting places.”

When we record where our life takes us, we can find purpose in the paths we have walked. Buy a journal and start taking notes.

Reminder #2:

Romans 15:24

“Whenever I journey to Spain, I will come to you. For I hope to see you on my journey, and to be helped on my way there by you, if first I may enjoy your company for a while.”

It is the people along our journey that make the trip worthwhile. Text a friend. Better yet, call or stop by for a visit.

Reminder #3:

Genesis 29:1

“Then Jacob continued on his journey and came to the land of the eastern peoples.”

Sometimes our best option is to place one foot in front of another and simply trust that we will get to the other side. Pull out those blinders and determine to get through the day.

Reminder #4:

1 Kings 19:4

“But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die, and said, ‘It is enough. Now, O Yahweh, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.’

There are times we will be depressed. If we take time out and spend it with God, we will find our way to the other side.

Reminder #5:

Nehemiah 2:6

“The king said to me (the queen was also sitting by him), For how long shall your journey be? And when will you return?’ So it pleased the king to send me; and I set him a time.”

When we make plans for the days we have, God will order them in a productive fashion. We must set goals for ourselves and have a party when we achieve them.

Reminder #6:

John 4:6

“Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, being tired from his journey, sat down by the well. It was about the sixth hour.”

Jesus provides us a place of rest. There will be times when we have used up our reserves, and we have to sit down and regain our strength. When we do, we will find Jesus at our side.

To face troubles in our journey is to be human. To continue to walk the path is courageous. To have Jesus at our side is brilliant.

When the troubles of life come at us, Jesus will be there to step in the way.

Excerpt of the Day

When Jesus comes to us, we must be ready to respond to him in the moment of his passing.
