A canoe is designed to slip easily through the water. However, waves can just as easily upset the slender craft. If we want to have a pleasurable canoeing experience, we need to find smooth water.
Our journey through this life is the same. The winds of trouble will do their best to sink us. Our only option for a pleasant voyage? We must find the smooth water.
We can’t change all the things that life brings our way. What we can do is change how we look at them. Our smooth water is in God, and when we trust in him, his hand will keep the waves at bay.
Let’s look at six ways God will smooth the waters for us:
In John 14:27, he says, Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world gives, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
Isaiah 26:3 tells us he will keep us in perfect peace, if our mind is stayed on him, and we trust in him.
Romans 8:6 lets us know that to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
Ecclesiastes 3:8 names this as our time of peace.
Luke 2:14 encourages us to give glory to God in the highest, and on earth we will receive peace and good will toward men.
Philippians 4:6-7 is our security that if we make our requests known unto God, we shall receive his peace, and he will keep our hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
None of these verses tells us the winds will stop blowing. Rather, they encourage us that when we give God control of our lives, he will give us peace inside.
We will have found the smooth water.
When we give Jesus control, we will find the peace that we seek.
