Jesus Journal

Sometimes it is good to have a short memory. When someone does us wrong, we are told to forgive and forget. However, can we?  The forgetting part? Is it possible?

We are taught that if we haven’t forgotten it, we haven’t forgiven it.

Well, what about those things we want to remember? For example, Jesus gives us favor with the dry cleaner, and she puts our order at the head of the line. If we don’t write that down, we will forget about what God has done for us. Or, what about that parking space that opens up right by the door? God’s blessing has showered us again.

But will we remember?

The children of Israel were headed out into the unknown. God was leading them from Egypt to the Promised Land. God was not blind, deaf, or dumb. He knew his children had been in Egypt for four centuries. And he knew the journey would be long. His children would need reminders that he was their God, and they were his children.

Exodus 17:14 tells us the first time the Lord commanded Moses to keep a detailed account of events on the journey.

In Exodus 34:1 God told Moses to write down his commandments to replace the ones he broke.

Then in Exodus 34:27 the Heavenly Father said, “Write down these words, because I am making a covenant.”

When the journey ended, God wanted Israel to have proof in their hands, in black and white, that he had been with them at every step of the way. God knew the perils they would face, and he knew that at each hardship, they would forget all the previous help he had given them. They would feel abandoned and alone.

They needed a Journey Journal.

We are very much the same. When hard times come our way, it is easy to forget all the previous help God has given us. We need proof in black and white that Jesus is with us every step of the way.

We need to start a Jesus Journal.

We need to record all the blessings we receive from him, from that unusually short line at the bank, to that item that rings up on sale, even though we were prepared to pay full price.

Write it all down, and then reread it from time to time. We will be reminded that Jesus does love us, and he is with us every step of the way.

When we store up a record of God’s blessings, we also store up a record of God’s love.

Excerpt of the Day

Disbelief is fine. Refusing to move past it when confronted with the truth cuts God to the quick.
