A seed contains the necessary nutrients to ensure a successful start to life. However, once those nutrients are used up, the emerging plant must be able to draw sustenance from its surrounding environment.
It must be planted in FERTILE soil, or it will wilt and soon die.
When we are planted in God and his Word, we will draw our spiritual sustenance from him, for he is the FERTILE soil that gives us life everlasting.
Let’s look at our FERTILE God:
F – He makes us his FIRSTFRUITS so that all the world will desire him.
James 1:18 tells us how we are conceived. We are birthed through the Word of Truth, so that we might become the premier example of his love to the world.
We are the FIRSTFRUITS of his love.
E – He ENLARGES his harvest until it cannot be contained.
Job 12:23 sets God’s power firmly in place, for it is by his hand that the nations prosper and that the nations fall. Only when we are planted in him will our roots sustain us.
God’s Word ENLARGES our understanding in him.
R – He is the ROOT of all creation, and his life sustains us.
Revelation 22:16 tells us Jesus is the beginning of life and the result of all it can be, for he is the ROOT of David as well as the descendant of David. He comes before, and he comes after all that there is.
Jesus was before time began and will continue to be after time ends.
T – He is the TASTE of all that is good for us.
Solomon 2:3 speaks of the apple tree and the fruits thereof. We delight in its shade, and its fruit is sweet to the TASTE.
When we draw close to God, his boughs will shade us, and his fruit will nourish us.
I – He is the fresh water that ISSUES forth to sustain us.
Ezekiel 47:8 tells of waters from whence come the ISSUE of life, and where its river flows, prosperity shall abound.
Jesus is the life that rose out of death, bringing us salvation from our sins.
L – He is the LEAF on the olive tree that gives us the promise of new life.
Genesis 8:11 is about the end of Noah’s trials in the ark. The dove returned with an olive LEAF to signify that life had returned to the earth.
Jesus is our LEAF unto the world telling those in need that God resides in our hearts.
E – He ENDURES forever, and his harvest shall never end.
Psalm 19:9 declares that the reverence of the Lord ENDURES forever, for his judgments are true and righteous.
When we are planted in his fields, we will draw our sustenance directly from him.
The world may entice us to depend on what it offers, but only in the fields of the Lord God Almighty can we truly plant deep roots and grow in him.
When we plant our roots in God, we will never falter in our walk with him.
