Home canning is a method of heating food in a pressure cooker in order to keep it edible for an extended period of time. It works because the trapped steam inside the cooker raises the temperature an additional 45 degrees hotter than otherwise possible, cooking the food faster and killing germs that might later spoil the food.
In addition, using the proper containers, we get an airtight seal as the food cools, one that cannot be broken without intervention from a strong-armed individual.
We are left with a pure and unbreakable promise of the finest food that human hands can prepare.
God’s promises are the same. When he makes a covenant with us, he pressure cooks it in the most durable container, and he is the only one strong enough to break the promise.
Look at the Pressure Cooker Promise God made David in 2 Samuel 7:13. God promised that David’s throne would be established forever.
God’s promise was a Pressure Cooker Promise of the strongest sort, sealed with the heat and pressure of his glorious power, and not even the wicked kings that came after David could break the promise of the Lord.
Even though they tried.
2 Kings 8:16-24 tells the story of Joram, son of Jehoshaphat. Joram’s father was one of the best kings Judah had ever known, yet Joram was one of the worst. Even so, God said that for the sake of David, he would not destroy Judah.
It was God’s Pressure Cooker Promise that made the difference. Even Joram’s evil could not break the promise God had made to David.
What promises has God made to us? A way out of financial difficulties? Improved health? Family reconciliation?
When God makes promises, they are Pressure Cooker Promises. Nothing short of God’s strong arm can break one of his promises, and he assures us he never will.
Just ask David, king and great man of God.
If God says it, we can write a check. The promise is already in the bank.
