Let’s discuss the Olympics for a moment.
Specifically, the opening ceremony. The part involving the flame that burns throughout the Games.
In 1984, Los Angeles in the United States hosted the Summer Games. A total of 3,636 torch bearers carried the flame for 9,300 miles.
Even farther was the 2008 Games in Beijing, China. The torch began its journey in Athens, Greece, and traveled through 21 countries before reaching the Olympic stadium nearly five months later.
The torch traveled 85,000 miles to set the Olympic flame alight.
Now let’s turn to our Christian walk with Jesus.
85,000 miles to carry a flame that only burns for two weeks once the Games start . . . and the people running the torch relay are excited to participate.
How excited are we, as Christians, to carry the torch of Jesus, representing God’s everlasting flame of salvation?
James 1:12 says:
“Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.”
85,000 miles, and we whine when our car won’t start in the morning, crying out, “God, why aren’t you taking care of me?”
85,000 miles, and we can’t keep from making cutting remarks to our spouse.
85,000 miles, and our neighbor across the street hasn’t a clue we claim to follow Jesus.
The flame we carry for Jesus can light up the world. Let’s hold it high. There are hurting and needy people around us right now, and they need to feel that Jesus cares about their needs.
When we march for Jesus, our flame beckons others to him.
