What would our lives be like without Jesus in the world?
That’s right. If Christmas were a dream in an unknown eye, no more than wishful thinking about what might have been, how would the world be different?
Where would the holes in our morality be? What would happen to loving others as much as we love ourselves?
Would the world tremble and shake with the disasters about to overtake it?
Thanks be to God that didn’t happen. We don’t have to wonder where we would be.
John 1:14 gives us the glorious start of all that was good two thousand years ago.
“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.”
This Christmas, as we gather around our light-bedecked tree and prepare to open our brightly wrapped packages, let’s pause and express our thanks for three awe-inspiringly wonderful things Jesus’ birth allows us to experience.
Awe-Inspiring Experience No. 1:
God became flesh, appearing in a real and tangible way to humanity.
Awe-Inspiring Experience No. 2:
God lived among humanity in the person of Jesus, truly experiencing the trauma of what it is to be human.
Awe-Inspiring Experience No. 3:
God through Jesus let his glory shine despite the mind-breaking muck of the human condition.
Charles Spurgeon, renowned Baptist minister, said:
“And when the Lord Jesus has become your peace, remember, there is another thing: good will towards men. Do not try to keep Christmas without good will towards men.”
When you decide to follow Christ, your life will make a dramatic change. And then … there was Jesus. You become a new person in him, and you see and treat others with the concern Jesus showed during his time on the earth.
Christmas is about Jesus, our example how to live for the good of everyone around us, not only us.
