Seriously, who digs in the hamper for a shirt to wear while shopping?
“Sure, I want to go to the mall with you. Let me get my workout pants from the dirty clothes basket. Be ready in a bit!”
No!! It can’t be allowed! Fresh clothing, a bright smile, and everything is so much pleasanter.
Yet, in the church, we do the same thing. The very person, the very behaviors, the very friends that God delivered us from, we pull them from the hamper, put them on, and head out to plunge into our daily life.
2 Corinthians 5:17 speaks to the life we lived before we found salvation:
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”
The old us, the party-hardy person we always put first … down the washing machine drain! We have been through the rinse cycle, and that old us is gone!
Those inconsiderate, self-destructive behaviors … washed away!
The old friends who would pull us back into our old ways … close the hamper lid and leave them there!
The truth is that you can’t put back on your old life and wear your new identity in Christ. You will either stink like yesterday’s workout pants or carry the freshness of Christ with you each day.
When you come to Christ, he scrubs you up. How about let’s keep it that way?
