Booting Envy Out the Door

Much of modern life is built on envy.

You know what I mean:

Jealously – Why do they drive a fancier car than I have?

Greed – So what if my bank account is chock full? I earned it.

Desire – A home in the mountains? Yes! I want one of those, too!

We even have a phrase for it: Keeping Up with the Joneses

Advertisers capitalize on this to sell us more and more.

That stylish new truck … you must have one, too.

A vacation in Aruba? Are you willing to be left out?

Why do you think fashion designers introduce new clothing lines every year?

Eyeglass styles … it’s all to keep you purchasing the latest and trendiest version.

Here’s what God’s Word has to say in Proverbs 14:30 (NIV):

"A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones."

Let’s revisit those last four words:

Envy rots the bones!

Jealously, the stress of not having a car as nice … bone rot has set in!

Greed, amassing  more and more because it’s never enough … the decay spreads!

Desire, never feeling satisfied because there’s always more … have we begun to decompose even as we strive to have one of everything?!?

Envy rots the bones. So, what are we to do? How are we to find peace?

1. Take a break from social media. The glitter you see is hollow and even fake. Real life isn’t so perfect.

2. Live in moderation. Search for a place where you can be comfortable in YOU, not in how you think others SEE you.

3. Give of what you have to good causes: God, your family, and your community.

What you have left will seem to go further when your time and money are less about you and more about making other’s lives better.

Let’s boot envy out the door. You will wash the rot from your bones and find peace when you do.
