Operating in Jesus’ Name

Biblical principles … they work for everyone, correct?

I mean, if they work for the saint and sinner alike, why bother with the Jesus part? Just practice them and go live like we want.

Wouldn’t that work out?

Scratch!!! Nope!!!

That’s not how the promises of the Bible work. There’s more to life than planting and harvesting. Just because we manage to amass tons of cash in our bank account doesn’t mean our soul is right with God.

Colossians 3:17 (NIV) says:

“And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”

The truths in this verse are revealed in three nuggety phrases. Let’s look at each one:

Nuggety Phrase No. 1:

“And whatever you do, whether in word or deed …”

Let’s see, what does the Word mean by this …

Greeting your neighbor …

Driving down the freeway …

Greeting the cashier …

Correcting your children …

Nuggety Phrase No. 2:

“… do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus …”

How do we operate in the name of the Lord Jesus?

We keep Christ at the center of everything. We apply his name to our prayers. We use his name frequently to remind ourselves that he is our source, our solution, and our salvation. We let other people hear us reference Jesus while we do this or that so they are aware of the importance of Christ in our lives.

Nuggety Phrase No. 3:

“… giving thanks to God the Father through him.”

Call it buttering up God, if you want, but if you’re sincere, it works. God desires our praise and worship. It triggers him to draw closer to us. He doesn’t want to be a vending machine that showers us with good things each time we tap our prayer button. He desires to be a loving Father that blesses us because he loves us so much.

When we operate on biblical principles AND AT THE SAME TIME keep the Lord in mind, we can better operate with a gracious and contented heart, and that draws the Lord unto us and creates in him a desire to bless us with all that we require from him.
