A Tulip in the Field

If you want to grow tulips, you must first plant tulip bulbs.

Sink a gladiola bulb in the soil, and you won’t get tulips.

A pine nut … nope.

A watermelon seed, sorry.

Corn kernel, acorn, or dandelion puffball … none of these will grow a tulip.

That’s why God says in Galatians 6:7-9 NIV:

“Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”

Sow love … it will come back to you.

Show kindness, and you will reap kindness.

Teach a Sunday school class, and you will positively influence the next generation.

Do good for and to others, and that good will be your reward.

However, there’s a dark side to this. Sowing in the flesh, not a good thing. Or as the NLT version says, “Those who live only to satisfy their own sinful nature will harvest decay and death from that sinful nature.”

Plant a thistle, and from the soil, a thistle will grow.

So, no “woe is me” allowed. Let’s roll up our sleeves, get out our tulip bulbs, and get to planting.

How do we grow tulips in our fields? Be kind. Show love to others. Practice generosity. Volunteer in the church. Keep our eyes on Christ and let him guide our footsteps.

When we do, we will see tulips coming up all around us.
