5 Seeds for Maturity in Christ

Farming is a waiting game.

No one out there expects to place seed in the ground in the morning and return in the afternoon to harvest the mature crop.

That would be silly, wouldn’t it?

As Christians, the same rule of planting and harvest applies. We must plant the seeds of Christ’s eternal nature in our lives and nurture them to a mature harvest.

Colossians 3:12 reveals the seeds God expects us to plant in our lives:

“Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience.”

Let’s look at ways we can know these five seeds have matured in us.

1. Compassionate Hearts – We see people stumble, and we help them rather than criticize them.

2. Kindness – We are gentle, even when we are firm. We consider the feelings of those around us.

3. Humility – We never consider ourselves in first place. We step back and let others take the lead.

4. Meekness – We submit to the authority over us. We accept our role in whatever endeavor we are in.

5. Patience – We have persistence even when the answer is long in arriving. Our stamina isn’t undermined by hardships along the way.

Perhaps you’re a fresh Christian, and you sometimes feel you don’t measure up. Maybe you don’t because you are still freshly planted. Don’t worry. Your maturity is coming. Be patient, be patient (No. 5 on our list), your perfection in Christ is coming!

We become like Jesus when we take the time to grow in him.

Jesus is our number one authority, and the only thing he tells us to do is love one another.
