As the Lord Forgave You

You stump your toe on a chair one night, and it aches for weeks.

You give the chair leg the stink eye each time you limp past. If only it wasn’t right there to where your foot would catch it in the middle of the night.

Now look at how you’re suffering … oh, woe is me! You wish you could make that chair pay …

Jesus says, “Get over it!”

Read about it in Colossians 3:13:

“Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.”

Let’s look at the components of this verse to distill the fullest meaning of its truth.

Component No. 1:

Bear with one another.

That means to ignore the painful stuff. Let it go. Get over it.

Component No. 2:

Forgive one another.

Yeah, like that. Say, “No big deal. Don’t have a second thought about it.”

Component No. 3:

Now note the next section:

If any of you has a grievance against someone.

Here’s the thing with this part. It doesn’t say, If anyone has done something wrong against you. This verse places the onus on us. If we are irritated with them, it’s not their duty to apologize. It’s our duty to forgive. Let it go. Get over it.

Component No. 4:

And finally, the most important part:

Forgive as the Lord forgave you.

Every sin, every wrongdoing, every mistake, nothing held back.

This verse isn’t presented to us as an optional exercise. It’s what we must do if we want to maintain a strong relationship with the Lord, our family, and our fellow Christians.

No more stink eye. No more moaning. Lots of forgiving.

Now’s the time. Let’s get to it.
