Great is our God, and greatly to be praised. Next we find the angels, for they are positioned beneath the mighty Ruler of heaven. Third in line is mankind, for he is created a little lower than the angels.
Where do the angels get their authority and power? From God or from man? The answer is obvious, for all power comes from God and God alone.
It is when we are attached to the Giver of all power that we also become powerful. If we fall away, the power departs from us.
David was anointed of the Lord. From his earliest days in the house of Saul to his mighty feats of battle, God strengthened him as he strengthened no other man. When David’s loyal followers stuck close to their king, God strengthened them, also.
1 Chronicles 11:1-21 reveals the exploits of David’s three companions who became known as his Mighty Men. They were the same three who were with him in the cave of Adullam. The Philistines were encamped around them, and the three soldiers broke through enemy lines to bring David a drink from the well of Beth-lehem.
Later, under David’s leadership, the first of David’s Mighty Men lifted his sword and killed three hundred of the enemy. The second routed the Philistines when they came to steal from the Israelites. The third raised his spear against three hundred warriors, destroying them all.
These men did not carry God’s anointing. It was David who was anointed of the Lord. However, his anointing spilled over onto his three Mighty Men, and as long as they were at David’s side, they achieved heights of success that equaled David’s own. In fact, they garnered so much acclaim, they became almost kings in the sight of their fellow men.
Yet, we must be reminded that it was David’s power that gave their arms strength and their eyes good aim. It was their nearness to their king that made them great.
When we walk with Jesus, he gives us his anointing. If we fall away, his anointing evaporates as quickly as the dew under the morning sun. Jesus’ power makes us almost kings, but it is the Holy One who resides in heaven above who retains the title of King of Kings.
We have nothing that does not come from the Father above. To trust in ourselves is to lose everything. To trust in Jesus is to become like him.
