Walk a forest trail.
Yeah, that sort, deep in the woods where the trees occlude the sky.
What do you see when the foliage overhead is thickest? I’ve got a clue for you: ALMOST NOTHING!
Here’s why. Our eyes are adept at adjusting from light to dark, but even the best of our eyes can’t do it immediately. Step from the sun into the shade, and for a time, we move forward as if blinded by the change in the light.
That’s what it’s like when we step from the light of God’s love into the first shadows of sin. We’re human, and even the best of us can’t always perceive where the shadows will take us.
It’s best to stay in the light and leave the darkness completely alone.
James 1:17 says:
“Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow.”
We like the “good and perfect gift” part of this, but what does this verse really say to us?
If we see a shadow, it’s not of God. We are to RUN back into the light.
It’s the only way to stay safe in the all-encompassing security of his loving arms.
When we walk with Jesus, we are constantly surrounded by the glory of his presence, and he illuminates every step we take.
