When children play fight, how do we tell the winner? That’s easy. The one still standing when the game is over.
A pirate poses with one foot on the chest of his defeated enemy.
A boxer … down and one, two, three, you’re out!
Try wrestling with your children. You lay on the floor and let them stand over you. Even though you’re stronger, and you could easily overpower them, they will feel like they are winning at the game.
Now picture God. We can agree that he is the epitome of righteousness. His position in this game of life is so far above us that just to compare ourselves is to wrestle with the feeling of defeat.
Our only hope to stand tall before him is to be faithful to his Word.
Psalm 85:11-13 shows us how.
“Faithfulness springs up from the ground, and righteousness looks down from the sky. Yes, the Lord will give what is good, and our land will yield its increase. Righteousness will go before him and make his footsteps a way.”
When we are faithful to God, his goodness will appear all around us. We will move from defeated to the winner.
That’s where God wants us, at his side, following his footsteps as they lead us toward him.
