A merry-go-round looks fun.
And it is! Music plays, drawing us in. The lights flash, bedazzling our eyes. And the painted animals we get to ride, how can anything be so beautiful?
Here’s the trick, though. No matter how long you ride the merry-go-round, you’ll always end up at the same spot.
Yeah, right where you got on is right where you’ll get off. No change, same step, no difference at all.
You can climb on the horse, kick it and yell for it to go faster, but you’ll arrive at the same place as the rider next to you no matter what you do.
Matthew 6:8 tells us:
“So do not be like them; for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.”
See, God understands the merry-go-round temptations of life.
A bigger house! People will look up to me! The parties I can throw!
A shiny car … the chrome … the nameplate … even a hood ornament! What class! I’ll be the toast of the town!
Vacations! Rings and watches and bears and stuff! One more thing and I’ll know what it is to be satisfied in life!
Nah, no, you won’t. Remember the words we read in Matthew. So, do not be like them.
Here’s the skinny this verse wants us to understand: God knows you need shelter. He understands the importance of transportation … the necessity of relaxation … and all the other things that we require to live a decent life in and through him.
Even when we haven’t approached him with our needs, he already knows.
So, chill. Climb down from the merry-go-round. It’s all flashing lights that go in a circle, anyway. If you want to get somewhere, follow Jesus.
He’s holding out his hand for you.
